Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and formation of viscous solitons on highly viscous liquids

چکیده
When wind blows over a highly viscous liquid, localized liquid bumps, of height the order capillary length, are generated and propagate downwind. These strongly nonlinear coherent structures, called ``viscous solitons'', contrast with weakly waves observed at low viscosity. Our experiments performed different viscosities demonstrate that solitons arise subcritically from unstable Kelvin-Helmholtz small fetch.

Viscous potential flow analysis of Kelvin–Helmholtz instability in a channel
We study the stability of stratified gas–liquid flow in a horizontal rectangular channel using viscous potential flow. The analysis leads to an explicit dispersion relation in which the effects of surface tension and viscosity on the normal stress are not neglected but the effect of shear stresses is. Formulas for the growth rates, wave speeds and neutral stability curve are given in general an...

متن کاملOn Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in superfluids
The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in superfluids is discussed, based on the first experimental observation of such instability at the interface between superfluid He-A and superfluid He-B [1]. We discuss why the Kelvin-Helmholtz criterion, the Landau critical velocity for nucleation of ripplons, and the free energy consideration all give different values for the instability treshold. 1 Classical...
متن کاملKelvin-helmholtz Instability by Sph
In this paper, we have modeled the Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability (KHI) problem of an incompressible two-phase immiscible fluid in a stratified inviscid shear flow with interfacial tension using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. The time dependent evolution of the two-fluid interface over a wide range of Richardson number (Ri) and for three different density ratios is numerically inve...
متن کاملBubble effect on Kelvin-Helmholtz’ instability
We derive boundary conditions at interfaces (contact discontinuities) for a class of Lagrangian models describing, in particular, bubbly flows. We use these conditions to study Kelvin-Helmholtz’ instability which develops in the flow of two superposed layers of a pure incompressible fluid and a fluid containing gas bubbles, co-flowing with different velocities. We show that the presence of bubb...
